Azerbaijani tea producer to open Georgian plant

A leading Azeri food company is set to expand its Georgian operations by building a new tea plant in Tbilisi.

According to Kazim Babayev, Azersun Holding, which is known as the major producer and exporter of Azerbaijani’s food industry, intends to invest $2 million in the tea production sector of Georgia. Babayey said last week the company intends to develop “a long-term plan for a tea developing strategy in Georgia.”

It is expected that Azersun’s Georgian plant will also target foreign markets.

“Georgia’s economy is developing very rapidly, so now it’s high time to make a new investment here,” Babayev said at a press conference Nov. 14.

Qatar eyes real estate sector

Georgia expects a $100-million investment from Qatari businessmen. The government made the announcement this week after the visit of a delegation from the state-run Diar property investment fund. 
The goal of the delegation’s visit was to acquire first-hand information about business opportunities in Georgia. The ministry offered the visiting businessmen the opportunity to purchase both state-owned assets or several private investment projects. 

According to officials, interest was mostly expressed in real estate and tourism.
“They mostly took an interest in real estate projects in Tbilisi and Batumi,” Economy Minister Zurab Pololikashvili told reporters Nov. 17 after meeting the delegation at the Radisson SAS Iveria Hotel. The Black Sea shore was assessed as a valuable investment.

Georgia hopes to make waves at travel forum

Eight private tourist companies, protected natural areas, Tbilisi City Hall and the Tourism Department were present at the World Travel Market in London Nov. 9-12. Foreign companies together with Georgia tour operators arranged travel routes right at the event.

Participants invested their energy and finances in the exhibition, hoping more and more tourists will visit Georgia soon. The travel industry event brings together worldwide buyers and sellers from every sector of the industry.
The main aim of Georgian tourism companies was to attract the attention of European travelers and media. The British-Georgian Chamber of Commerce (BGCC) organized a special evening for journalists.
“This is the first time we have held a press conference, but we consider this to be the start of a tradition,” BGCC Founder Mako Abashidze told Georgia Today. “At the press conference, we had a very good turnout from UK national media and now we are following up on all publications. The articles will be reprinted on the BGCC Web site.”

Populi presents pop-art card

The country’s largest supermarket chain Populi launched a new plastic card campaign this week. The pop-art card is an innovative product on the market, allowing customers to participate in various company lotteries and campaigns. The card also offers discounts on a wide assortment of goods.

As the company’s top management said at a press conference at the Sheraton Metechi Palace, Populi is changing its development strategy from focusing on growth to customer service.

“We established this card because I am sure customers will actively use it. This innovation provide many opportunities for our clients,” said Populi General Director Eugene Pichkhaia. “The rapid extension strategy has been reached. Now it is time to change our mission and create more and more innovations for our customers.”

Government to auction Central Republican Hospital

The state-owned Central Republican Hospital is up for sale. The Economy Ministry announced the decision Nov. 16 as part of the government’s long-term strategy to improve healthcare institutions. 

The National Hospital Sector Restructuring Plan was launched in 2007 to modernize infrastructure and improve service quality by encouraging the private sector’s active participation in healthcare.

An advertisement on the ministry’s Web page says the successful investor will develop a contemporary, high-tech, multi-use facility with a 430-bed capacity, including the existing 80 critical unit beds.

Bank Republic expanding

Bank Republic (BR) opened a new branch, making available Western-style universal corporate and retail banking solutions and high-quality service in the Nadzaladevi district. The event coincided with Societe Generale’s (SG) third anniversary on the Georgian market.

The bank’s top management, together with honored guests and media representatives, hosted the opening ceremony. BR Supervisory Council members from SG Paris, who support the bank’s activities, attended the celebration.

“We acquired BR three years ago and we are very pleased with our investments in the country,” Societe General Europe head Jean-Didier Reigner told Georgia Today. “Today the global financial crisis is obviously jeopardizing our results like those of every bank in the world, but we are ready to benefit from the economic growth of the country.”

Bank of Georgia offers exclusive service

The Bank of Georgia established SOLO, an innovative exclusive service for high-income segments of the population.

General Director Irakli Gilauri spoke briefly about the innovative service at a press conference this morning at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel. According to the bank head, SOLO is a full spectrum of services allowing clients to bank with the help of a personal assistant.

Clients will not have to work with various bank employees, and will instead be assigned personal assistants.

South Caucasus against tuberculosis

The “Tuberculosis Control in the South Caucasus” conference was held Nov. 17 - 18 at the Old Tbilisi Hotel. The conference was arranged by the Regional Tuberculosis Regional Program, and implemented by the GOPA/EPOS Consultants consortium and financed by the German Development Bank (KfW).

The event was hosted by Health Minister Alexander Kvitashvili. The meeting was also attended by country delegations from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as leading experts and representatives of international organizations involved in tuberculosis control in the region.

The objective of the workshop was to summarize the achievement of national tuberculosis programs in the recent years, and set challenges and priority directions for the future to influence the sustainability of effective tuberculosis control.

People`s Bank announces assets growth

The People’s Bank of Georgia (PBG) announced today that its total assets grew 17.7 percent m-o-m to 328.2 million lari (the highest level since April 2008). October was the first full-month since the purchase of a 91.218-percent equity interest in PBG by Liberty Capital.

Client deposits increased 34.7 percent m-o-m to 209.6 million lari. Retail current account balances and term deposits reached 51.4 million lari (down 1.3 percent m-o-m) and 42.1 million lari (up 2.9 percent m-o-m), respectively. Net loans/total deposits ratio is at an all-time low, at 30.4 percent as at Oct. 31, 2009, despite the resumption of retail lending by PBG in October 2009. Total liabilities increased 19.1 percent m-o-m and equaled 311.4 million lari.
