A new take on Georgian Easel Painting

Print version Print version

Author:  Story by Maria Savostyanova

This week, the Georgian National Museum and NOVA Science Publishers presented a unique book to the Georgian public at GNM’s Auditorium.

The first full-scale scientific work on Georgian Easel painting from the second half of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century belongs to the pen of Professor Irina Arsenishvili, Senior Conservator of Art Direction of the Georgian National Museum.

Her beautifully written and richly illustrated book gives the reader a chance to explore the history of Georgian easel painting and its treasures. Moreover, this first profound study of the main artistic and stylistic tendencies of the period in Georgia in connection with both Russian and European art reveals more parallelism and relations than one could imagine. The book features works by such Georgian painters as Giorgi Maisuradze, Niko Pirosmanishvili, Lado Gudiashvili, Elene Akhvlediani, and many others.

“Georgian art is an organic part of Western Art,” Arsenishvili stated. “At the same time, in the process of comparison the national artistic peculiarity of Georgian art emerges even more.”

Many devoted friends of the Georgian National Museum attended the presentation of the book by Arsenishvili, recently published in New York. Nadya Gotsiridze-Columbus, vice president of NOVA Science Publishers, and its plenipotentiary in Georgia Sergo Gotsiridze expressed their joy regarding the release of the book.

“We are very proud and excited to be working with our Georgian authors,” Gotsiridze-Columbus told Georgia Today.
